Intent

We wish for our students to leave Handsworth with a chronologically secure knowledge of British, local and worldwide history. Our History curriculum will provide students with an understanding of how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources. We are aware that the curricular content we choose to teach may convey different cultural, ideological and ethical messages to our students. As a result, we are actively presenting our History Curriculum from various perspectives to broaden student understanding. It is important to us that our curriculum is rooted in truth and bolstered with evidence.

We are an anti-racist and inclusive school, and our History topics are selected with this in mind,  ensuring that our historical content explores a wide range of viewpoints, where every student has the opportunity to see themselves as part of the tapestry of time. We teach a challenging and robust history curriculum interwoven with stimulating and memorable learning experiences. We aspire for our children to be provided with the tools to think critically, use sources effectively, and apply historical vocabulary.

At Handsworth Primary School, we pride ourselves on our engagement with the local community. As part of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion ambitions, we prioritise the teaching and learning of a History Curriculum which is relevant and engaging to our students. Our curriculum is shaped by the understanding that it should be taught with consideration and sensitivity to the fact that history has been experienced differently by different people. We at Handsworth understand that building a strong, positive relationship with the community we serve is imperative by listening to and appreciating its identities and experiences.
