Without music, life would be a mistake.

Friedrich Nietzche

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. High-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. National Curriculum for Music

At Handsworth, we believe, as it states in the National Plan for Music, that “Music is an essential part of a broad and ambitious curriculum for all pupils. It must not be the preserve of the privileged few. Music should be planned and taught as robustly as any other foundation curriculum subject.”

The power of music to change lives: A national plan for music.

In many cultures, music is part of everyday activities. It is an integral part of rites and ceremonies, often with specific pieces of music or songs being linked to celebrating an event.

At Handsworth, our aims are

  • To celebrate the musical heritage of both children and staff.

  • To explore music from different cultures and times.

  • To share important music and discover the musical skills we can learn.
