Our Curriculum

At Handsworth, we believe that knowledge is empowering, unlocking doors, providing a foundation for achieving success, reaching deep understanding and being creative. The more children know the more they can learn. We strive to build a coherent curriculum, a curriculum where learning experiences, knowledge and skills are sequenced and woven together. We develop an understanding of the subject disciplines which sit at the heart of the school curriculum model. The subject disciplines make different types of meaning and they make it in different ways.

 

The role of the curriculum is to take learners’ shallow knowledge and understanding of a topic and make it deeper. For this to happen, the curriculum needs to be planned carefully so that key ideas and concepts are introduced sequentially, continuously revisited, remembered and built upon. The purpose of the curriculum is to build up the content of long term memory so that when students are asked to think, they are able to do so in more powerful and meaningful ways.

Our Curriculum acts not only as a vehicle for building children’s knowledge but also as a tool with which they can better shape their school experience, their relationships with others and the future world they will inhabit.
