Intent

All children are curious about the world around them. From the earliest age, they experiment and form ideas about the world and how it works. In Science, we encourage this attitude and allow children to develop their ideas by teaching skills and processes in order for them to increase their knowledge and understanding. Science provision gives children the opportunity to better understand how and why things function and teaches them about the techniques, mechanisms and complicated systems of the world that surrounds them. Children can only change their ideas when they find out for themselves.

The aims of Science teaching are:

  • To foster the idea of questioning and curiosity and to gain confidence in doing this.

  • To give freedom to try out ideas.

  • To show appreciation of children’s ideas.

  • To develop skills in investigation and research.

  • To challenge misconceptions.

  • To ask open-ended and demanding questions.

  • To instil respect for others and the environment.

  • To develop an ability to use evidence and make sense of the world for themselves.

  • To develop the use of the vocabulary associated with scientific work.

  • To follow safe procedures and control risks.

  • To take responsibility for their own learning, to link Science to the outside world and encourage them to explore and investigate.

  • To facilitate children’s learning through a journey of discovery, discussions, engagement and the use of scientific language.

  • To build on their enthusiasm and natural sense of wonder about the world.

  • To encourage children to collect relevant evidence, question the outcomes and persevere.

  • To enable children to appreciate that we do not always know the answers and results when carrying out scientific enquiry.

In Summer 2023, we will be introducing the Science Mastery Scheme from Arc Curriculum (soon to be OUP). The overviews will continue to reflect the transition from our old scheme to the new scheme.
